About Capital Health Careers
Background

On February 17, 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law the American Recovery & Investment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act). The intent of the Recovery Act is to preserve and create jobs, promote the nation’s economic recovery, and assist those most impacted by the recession.
Under the Recovery Act, the Department of Labor (DOL) has allocated $220 million for projects that provide training, education, and job placement services to prepare workers to enter careers in the health care sector. These careers include nursing, allied health, long-term care, and Health Information Technology (HIT) positions.
To be eligible, you must have the following status:
- Unemployed (Individuals who are without a job and who want and are available for work)
- Dislocated (Individuals who have been terminated or laid-off or who have received a notice of termination or lay-off from employment, or were self-employed but are now unemployed)
- Incumbent Workers (Individuals who need training to secure full-time employment, advance in their careers, or retain their current occupations.)
Capital Health Careers Project
In February 2010, DOL awarded Providence Health Foundation a $4.9 million grant for the Capital Health Careers (CHC) Project. The CHC Project is a partnership among training providers, employers, and support service organizations in the Washington, DC metro area dedicated to helping unemployed, dislocated, and incumbent workers enter or advance in health care careers. CHC provides intensive training and individualized placement assistance for individuals seeking careers in health care. Training is provided by the Community College of the District of Columbia and Catholic University of America.
Mission
Over the three years of the grant, CHC, which is comprised of Providence Hospital and 8 other partners, will recruit, train, support, and place 500 persons (unemployed, displaced, or incumbent workers) that live or work in the District, for careers in the healthcare sector. Through these activities, CHC aims to strengthen the numbers in our healthcare workforce and improve the District’s pool of highly qualified health care workers.
