Our Community Partners

Our community partners truly invest in the Providence Mission. With each partnership we are doubly blessed:

  • We deepen our connections with the community, and
  • Each connection sparks an important project that can make a critical difference to our patients

CenteringPregnancy® and CenteringParenting®

Babies of Mothers participating in CenteringParenting®

CenteringPregnancy® provides prenatal care to women in a supportive group format. Moms-to-be take responsibility for their own health, track pregnancy progress, and learn about prenatal growth needs and what to expect during labor and delivery. Participants support one another and bond as they prepare for childbirth together. CenteringParenting® is an innovative approach to first-year well-baby care and parent education in a group format. Moms and their new babies meet monthly to combine group well-baby checks with guidance on infant development and parenting. Both programs have been well-received by patients and staff alike.

Impact:

  • Over 350 women have obtained their prenatal care in the Centering group model
  • 96% of Centering participants keep their prenatal appointments, compared to 84% in conventional prenatal care.
  • The premature birth rate for Centering patients is 4%, compared to 12.9% for the national rate, and 15.9% for the District of Columbia.
  • Centering Mothers breastfeed at higher rates and for longer periods than mothers in conventional care.

Among our Community Partners who make Centering possible are:
  • CareFirst BlueCross/BlueShield
  • March of Dimes
  • The Washington Chapter of Girl Friends
  • Centering Healthcare Institute

“I love having my prenatal care this way. The group has become so important to me – they are like a family to me!”

“Centering Pregnancy care is a real hands-on opportunity for my staff, and definitely a morale booster for these dedicated professionals.”

Medical House Calls

Many frail and elderly homebound individuals with chronic medical conditions do not receive healthcare until their needs are at a crisis point. The Medical House Calls program provides physician, nurse practitioner, and social worker visits in the comfort and security of their homes. Caregivers and families receive support as well to continue their important work.

  • The most frail and vulnerable patients in the District of Columbia have a dedicated health ally in the House Calls program.
  • Patients shift from health crisis-management to a more proactive mode, preventing minor problems from developing into significant injury or illness.
  • The elderly are able to maintain independent living longer, and with greater quality of life.

Providence Hospital would not be able to implement this important program without support from
  • The Hearst Foundation
  • The W. O’Neil Foundation

Breast Cancer Patient Navigator

Our Breast Cancer Navigator Team

Many women needing mammograms simply do not get them. They may be fearful, or lack necessary resources. Additionally, newly diagnosed women can be too distraught and overwhelmed to investigate and access care options. With assistance from our community partners, Breast Cancer Patient Navigation services are available at Providence. Patient Navigation provides breast health services that are….

  • Comprehensive
  • Coordinated
  • Patient-centered
  • Efficient
  • High-quality
…for women who might not be able to otherwise receive care. Our community partners help us champion the cause of a medically underserved woman at a time when she is feeling particularly vulnerable.

Grant support for the Providence Hospital Breast Cancer Navigation Program includes:

  • The Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention
  • The EagleBank Foundation
  • NIH Study through The George Washington Cancer Institute

“I am extremely satisfied with the Breast Care Navigator program at Providence.”

“Staff are so patient, and they told me about things I didn’t even know were available that really helped.”

“I would recommend the Breast Care Navigator staff at Providence to others – they are like daughters to me!”
