Doctors' Day

Celebrate National Dr.'s Day with a Gift to Providence!

In 1991, March 30th became the official National Doctors’ Day, a day to remember the courage, compassion and sacrifice of our nation’s physicians. Celebrating Doctors’ Day with a gift to Providence in honor of a physician(s) is a wonderful way to pay tribute to that individual, while helping us ensure that we can continue providing exceptional healthcare, close to home.

The Story:

On Oct. 30, 1990, President George Bush signed a Public Law designating March 30th as “National Doctors' Day,” but it was actually on March 30, 1933 that the first unofficial observance to honor physicians took place.

Doctors' Day was started by Eudora Brown Almond, Wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, who decided to set aside a day to honor physicians. The first observance in 1933 included the mailing of greeting cards and the act of placing flowers, usually red carnations, on the graves of deceased doctors.

Doctors' Day also marks a monumental moment in medical history, being the day in 1842 that Crawford W. Long, M.D. of Jefferson, GA, administered the first ether anesthetic to a patient and then operated to remove a tumor from the man’s neck. After waking from the surgery the patient swore that he felt nothing during the procedure and wasn’t aware it was over until he woke up.

This year, in recognition of National Doctors' Day, the Foundation invites individuals to make a gift in honor of the exceptional, patient first care that they receive from their physicians at Providence Hospital.
