In February 2010, CHC received $4.9 million grant from the Department of Labor as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
CHC is a joint effort of Washington-area education, health care, not-for-profit and employer organizations that will increase the number of qualified, entry-level health care workers in D.C. while also strengthening the skills of incumbent workers, particularly in the high-demand area of health information technology.
Regional and national studies show that there simply are not enough qualified applicants to fill health care industry vacancies at all levels. At the same time, D.C. has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. Capital Health Careers will combine aggressive recruitment, intensive training, individualized placement and retention efforts to create a pool of qualified health care industry workers over the next three years. In addition, more than 100 individuals, both new and incumbent workers, will receive specialized training in health information technology.
CHC incorporates best practices from the fields of education, health care and workplace development. Participants will receive industry-recognized certificates and degrees that increase their value in the marketplace. Participants will also have access to supportive services such as child care, transportation and case management—critical factors for increasing training and job retention rates.
CHC partners include Providence Hospital (Project Oversight and Fiscal Agent), the Catholic University of America, the Community College of D.C., the D.C. Department of Employee Services and Workforce Investment, the D.C. Department of Disability Services, D.C. Primary Care Association, United Planning Organization, and the Greater Washington Regional Alliance for Careers in Health. Each of these partners also brings established networks of community, employer and other stakeholders to the project.
